Nobody has crafted a more dangerous and important weapon since the ancient Greeks honed their art of persuasion, or what we know as rhetoric. No nuclear weapon, no advanced ballistic missile, no ship of the line, can compare to the awesome power that we humans command with our tongues and our pens.

During the political season, we often hear references to rhetoric, but what exactly do we mean by that word, and what were the origins of it in the Greco-Roman world?
